Re: Sherpa engine seized!

Well slowly but surely I've been very carefully breaking the new engine(basically) in. It's been a crazy crazy summer so far but Rocky and I finally reached 1000 miles!!! Yay!!! There was still an issue with cold starting. I'm not sure how hot it had to be for it to be ready to run quickly because it's been in the 90's and still has to warm up a looooong time and even then don't get on the throttle for a couple blocks. Sherpa's are known for this because of the extremely lean jetting. My dear friend and neighbor offered to rejet for me so I ordered the recommended (by most of the Sherpa thread on the adv site) and we rejetted and WOW what a difference! Fired right up no hesitation and ready to go. I had a beautiful ride and filled up on the way home. 70 mpg. Not complaining about anything there.
The next day I planned a ride with my brother so I went out early and did my pre-ride check and noticed the oil level seemed high. Since I had changed it the day before I figured I didn't have it vertical and went about my day. When we got ready to leave Rocky complained bitterly and ran crappy. Needles to say I was a little sick. Besides being jetted very lean Sherpa's petcock doesn't have a fuel shutoff. Prime, on and reserve plus they are known to fail. Well either it failed, I left it on prime or a needle valve stuck because there was gas in my oil - which caused my oil level to rise There's just a window no dipstick. I think I would have smelled it if I had a dipstick. We disconnected the fuel line and the gas stopped after a few seconds so we're not exactly sure what happened. I changed the oil and filter 3 times and went for a ride today and it ran fantastic!!! AGAIN!! Yesterday during all this drama I ordered a new petcock WITH an OFF position and it came today. That was fast but I won't get I on till tomorrow - another story...
Well that's the Rocky saga to date. My next change is a new front fender. There's a low one on there now and I'm going high. When I have a chance I'll tell the rest of the story - probably in the "what I did wrong and what I learned from it. Until then. Happy trails!
